The editors at Covert Action magazine really outdid themselves when they found an old photograph online as the lead illustration for my article, “A Condensation of Military Incompetence.” Although I’m sure I never saw it at the time, the sign shown in the photograph was one welcoming people to the “ASCOM AREA COMMAND” (of the U.S. Eighth Army in Korea), where I was stationed. Everything about the worn sign is curious. It’s beside a public Korean road, but it’s written in English. Its almost exclusive audience, therefore, would be American.
