I recall one episode in which the Enterprise happens on an alternate planet Earth, at a twentieth century level of development, in which the Roman Empire never fell. This may well have been my first exposure to the genre of counterfactual historical fiction. I have long thought that, if I ever did have the follow-through to write a novel, it would surely be in this vein. The possibilities are endless, after all.
